Ilona Szymkowicz studied law in Poland, earned her law degree at USC, and is now admitted in six states. In 2022 she launched Szymkowicz Law, with offices in Miami Beach and Las Vegas, handling immigration, personal injury, and medical malpractice.
Immigration wasn’t on her radar. She skipped the class in law school. But while waiting on her Florida license, a friend pointed out that immigration is federal practice, and an AILA fundamentals course opened a door she didn’t know existed. Her first client? The manager of the bank where she opened her trust account. That client is still with her today.
In this episode we discuss:
- How immigration law found her and why a passing tip from a colleague became a career
- Talent and well-known clients: are they really harder to work with?
- Boundaries with clients and protecting your team from burnout
- Hiring people better than you instead of micromanaging
- Why firms go quiet on clients as they scale, and what that says about supervision
- Thriving under pressure: denials, policy changes, and why the wins feel bigger now
- Advice to her 20-year-old self
